Who is Jay?

 

Jay was born in 1962, John Duncan Watson, III, and has been known as “Jay” ever since.  He attended Montreat Anderson College here in Buncombe County where he met Susan Teague.  They married in 1984 and over their twenty-five years of marriage have been blessed with four children. He later earned a Master of Arts in Public Policy, and a Juris Doctor (law degree).

Jay and Susan returned to Buncombe County in 1995, where Jay began practicing law.  His clients have included individuals, small businesses, non-profits, and national companies.  He has handled civil and criminal matters, practiced in state and federal courts, and on the district, superior and appellate court levels.  Jay is a partner in the firm of Watson Bailey Ciochina, LLP, is admitted to the State Bars of North Carolina and South Carolina, and is a Certified Superior Court Mediator with the courts of N.C. and S.C.

Prior to practicing law, Jay worked with the North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission, under the  North Carolina Department of Crime Control & Public Safety in  Raleigh. While serving the Crime Commission he provided oversight, training and review to U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance grant programs of multi-jurisdictional law enforcement task forces operating Special Prosecution Task Forces, Drug Enforcement and Investigative Task Forces, Sting Operations, and Criminal Justice Education Programs throughout the state of North Carolina.

Jay has also served as a legal intern with the United States Attorney’s Office and as a legislative intern in the U.S. Senate in Washington D.C.  He enjoys diving and is a certified rescue diver.
